Custom Closet Tour | Organizational Tips

October 10, 2019January 28, 2020 Bella Bee Comments Off on Custom Closet Tour | Organizational Tips

Hi there! This post is one that I am absolutely giddy about! My dream closet is finally complete from floor to ceiling & I am so excited to share every detail with you!

Below is a link to a video on IGTV where I’m sharing each closet section with you! You can watch that here!

Keep reading for some super helpful closet organizational & storage tips as well as some info on my closet!

Its easier to see in the video, but I have two reach-in closets that face each other! They used to just be dowels straight across, but for my birthday a few years ago, I got custom closets with shelves & organizers from Closets by Design (highly recommend them if you’re local!). On the back wall in between the two closets I hung up shelves for my smaller handbags, & it has been such a game-changer! Not only has it optimized my storage space, but its made this little wardrobe area feel like a walk-in closet now that three walls are being used!

Tip 1: Shelves! I highly recommend adding shelves on any free wall you may have in your room or closet to optimize space! Whether it’s for handbags, shoes or any other accessory that can double as decor- it saves you tons of space in your actual closet! Check out the shelves I used for my bag wall here!

Tip 2: The hidden shelf concept. If you have a closet with dowels, installing a shelf right above the dowel makes for some great hidden storage. You can see in the photo below! I keep my Ugg boots & my school textbooks (weird combo, I know lol) on this shelf in my closet & you can barely see because of the coats hanging above that cover it. This is also ideal for below your hanging clothes for more shoe space!

Tip 3: This is for hoodies or other bulky items! I am limited on drawer & dowel space in my room! Since anything with a hood is much thicker than your average t-shirt, I highly suggest folding it instead of hanging! Since I had the shelves put in my closet, hanging my hoodies & pullovers has really freed up my dowel section! If you do not have shelves, this same folding technique can be done with storage bins! If you have room under your bed or any place like that, storage bins like these low ones here are a great option!

The same goes for sweaters! No matter how thick or thin a sweater is, I always fold them! It saves space on your dowels and its better for the sweater. Hanging them can cause stretching in the shoulders.

Tip 4: Storage bins. I have a bunch of bins & containers in my closet on the shelves not only to create a little dimension in the closet, but they work wonders for smaller items! What I put in my bins: winter scarves, hats & gloves. In the summer I switch out the winter gear for bathing suits! In another bin, I also keep all of my camera supplies!

Tip 5: Fold your jeans! Another bulky item that was taking up space on my dowels were my jeans! I have A LOT of jeans lol. So I stack them on a shelf instead of taking up all of that hanging space!

Tip 6: Hooks! I have 4 hooks in total in my closet! They’re great for things you grab on the daily! For me, that’s the bathrobe that I wear in the morning while doing my makeup, or my go-to bad hair day hat. It’s nice to have the items that you reach for frequently out in the open. Here is the link to the gold hook! The elephant one is from Anthropolgie a few years ago!

Tip 7: Storing totes. Tote bags are typically my go-to everyday bag because I’m a student & I need my laptop & way too many books with me at all times lol. What I do to store them in my closet is I’ll take the dust bag for the tote (if it came with one) & stuff it with plastic or tissue paper! I put this in the bag to keep its shape & keep track of the dust bag because I always seem to lose those lol.

Moving on to closet number 2! This is mainly my shoe & acessory closet which makes it my favorite lol.

Tip 8: The jewelry pull out! I absolutely love this feature! I chose this while designing my closet with Closets by Design, but you can buy them separately from so many places online as well! Similar here! This sneaky little pullout is great for hanging necklaces, belts or scarves!

Tip 9: More bins! The two velvet bins you see below house my headbands & baseball caps! I got these from Marshalls a few years ago, but here I linked the whole bin page from the Container store! They have absolutely every bin you could dream of lol. In the fall I also keep a few pairs of sandals out for the few warmer days & the flip flops I wear when I get a pedicure lol. Since I don’t want these mixed in on the shelves with my boots, I keep them in this wire bin from Amazon, so that they’re camouflaged, but still accessible!

Tip 10: Acrylic Drawers for sunglasses. My sunglasses collection has grown quite a bit, & keeping them all in their cases was becoming a bit of a challenge! Now I keep them in these acrylic drawers from the Container Store so that they can be on display & I can easily see them & pick a pair for the day! I have two of the acrylic drawers stacked & it works perfectly.

Tip 11: Jewelry drawer organizers. The purple drawer liners you see below are from Closets by Design, but the pink one above is from The Container Store! They have an ENDLESS selection of organizers to put in drawers for your bling! Check out my pink one & all of the other combinations they have here!

Those are my 11 tips for organizing your closet better & optimizing on space! Remember to check out the video here on IGTV to see the closet in action!
