Building a skincare routine can seem like a daunting task, but the truth is: once you get in the habit of it, you wonder how your skin survived without it.
My skincare routine is as basic as they come. Here is a run down on what I do to prep and cleanse my skin morning and night!
|In the morning |Water, water, water. WATER! If anyone has ever told you about their MORNING cleanser, then they are doing it so so wrong! Overnight, your skin produces positive oils. Washing your face in the morning with a harsh soap or cleanser does nothing but strip away those positive oils you produced overnight. If you strip your skin too often (because you think it will reduce oils) your sebaceous glands (oil producing glands) go into attack mode, and try to makeup for the oils you just stripped away, creating more, and more, and more oil. So contrary to what you may believe, cleansing your face too often can actually make your skin oilier.
That being said, in the morning I simply rinse my skin with water, pat (not rub) it with a towel to dry, and apply my gel moisturizer & eye cream. My skin is combination, so gel moisturizers are the perfect kind to hydrate but not over hydrate my face. Other types such as serums, or thick creams, are either too light or too heavy; causing my skin to peal, or break out. I use eye cream not only (attempt) to fight wrinkles, but because I have a very dry under eye area. If I try to blend out concealer without using eye cream, my skin looks super crepey, and thats just not cute.
After rinsing and hydrating, I apply my makeup.
|At Night| My routine is still very simple; I switch between two cleansers every other night (to pretty much keep my skin on its toes). I strongly believe that if you continuously use the same products, your skin builds up some kind of immunity to it. So I use the Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Purifying Cleansing Oil, & the Clarisonic Acne Daily Clarifying Cleanser, which both remove my makeup as well. Every other day when I alternate to the Acne Daily Clarifying Cleanser, I use my Clarisonic. Using a Clarisonic everyday, or any other kind of exfoliant for that matter, has the same affect as cleansing too often; all it does is unnecessarily strip the surface of your skin. However, exfoliating every other day (or even less) promotes the production of collagen, and obviously removes dead skin. I prefer to use a Clarisonic to exfoliate rather than a harsh scrub.
After I cleanse, I simply tone my skin to rebalance it’s PH (because cleansers can raise or lower the PH of your skin. Toners restore it back to between 4.5-5.5, where it should be). I use the Kiehl’s Herbal Toner simply because it is not too strong, it removes excess debris that the cleanser may have missed, and because I love the way it smells. I simply pour a little bit of toner onto a cotton ball and rub it on my face. I repeat this until the cotton comes up clean, (usually takes 3 cotton balls).
At night I do not moisturize my skin because like I said before, your skin produces natural oils overnight. My skins leans towards the oilier side anyway, so adding even more moisture overnight would only make me break out. However, as you age, it is beneficial to use a night cream moisturizer, simply because your skin produces less oil as you get older.
|Masks| I use a face mask 1-2 times a week at night. However my skin is feeling or looking that day, determines what kind of mask I will use. My most used mask is the Goddess Skin Clay Mask by Charlotte Tilbury. I love this mask because it’s a clay mask (which absorb oil), but it doesn’t leave my skin feeling too dry. If I ever have the time to use a mask in the morning, I love using the Kiehl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Mask because it is an amazing brightening mask, and it creates such a beautiful surface for my makeup.
